Central Services

This group is under the supervision of City Manager Jon Mendenhall.

  • Construction: 

  • Replace aged water mains, failed storm drains & structures
  • Planning, site work & improvements on existing & new projects
  • Regrade ditches & correct water flow beyond normal maintenance
  • Replace aged & undersized pipe
  • Sewer repairs deemed beyond normal maintenance
  • Fleet Maintenance:
  • Keeps service records on all equipment and vehicles
  • Maintains all equipment: backhoes, pumps, mowers, tractors, etc.
  • Maintains all vehicles: cars, dump trucks, fire trucks, etc.
  • Maintains the fuel dispensing system

Operations

This group is under the supervision of Operations Manager Darren Gatewood.

  • Collection & Distribution: 
  • Maintains all sewer collection lines
  • Maintains all water distribution lines
  • Maintains all water meters in the distribution system
  • Replaces aged and undersized piping in the system
  • Responds to all sewer and water breaks and makes repairs
  • Solid Waste:
  • Collects residential trash and bulk waste
  • Collects yard and wood waste
  • Runs and maintains the Recycling Center
  • Streets:
  • Maintains all storm sewer systems
  • Maintains all street right of ways
  • Maintains all streets: patching and cleaning
  • Maintains snow removal and ice control
  • Maintains traffic controls: stop lights, street signs and markings
  • Mowing and litter control
  • Runs the leaf collection system
  • Warehouse
  • Maintain computerized inventory of parts
  • Maintain parts inventory, stock shelves, organize bins
  • Order, receive and stock parts needed for maintenance and repairs to water/sewer lines, streets, etc. 
  • Provide safety supplies for employees
  • Maintain daily work orders for Solid Waste, C&D and Street Division

Utilities

This group is under the supervision of Utilities Manager Melinda Ward.

  • Mebane Bridge Wastewater Treatment Plant:
  • Treats domestic and commercial sewage and can treat 13.5 million gallons per day
  • Oversees the enforcement of the Sewer Use Ordinance for industries and commercial businesses
  • Robert A. Harris Water Filtration Plant:

  • Can produce 21 million gallons per day of treated water
  • Flushes lines and analyzes water throughout the system weekly
  • Residential water testing is available for free
  • Water Resources:

  • Maintains and repairs the two plants, elevated tanks, lift stations and pump stations
