An employee in this class inspects structures for construction and installation compliance with State building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes. Work also involves the inspection of buildings and property for compliance with appropriate local codes. Work involves frequent field checks. Tact, courtesy, and firmness must be exercised in dealing with contractors and the general public.
A Level I Standard Certificate, from the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board, as an inspector in one of the five inspection areas (building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and fire) and the ability to obtain Level I certification in other inspection areas as required by City management.
An employee may be hired without the required State certification; however, until this is obtained, he/she shall be considered in a trainee status and shall be paid at a salary below the minimum of the recommended salary grade until the required certification is obtained. During the duration of a trainee appointment, the employee is on probationary status.
